The Return to Freddy's 5 (formerly known as The Return to Freddy's Rebooted and The Return to Freddy's Remastered before that), was going to be the first game within Return to Freddy's Volume 2, and the final installment in the TRTF timeline chronologically.

However, upon Bioninjagames' cancellation of TRTF5 on February 6th, 2017, the TRTF Saga was officially ended by Tyler Ahlström, the founder of the series.

It was confirmed that Tyler would recreate the game, but since his departure and the cancellation of The Return to Freddy's: Chapter One, along with a rebooted series, were abandoned, it is likely that this might not be the case anymore for Tyler to work on his planned rebooted TRTF projects and move on with original games and ideas.

Breim has confirmed in a comment question in the Game Jolt page of A TRTF Story: Desolation if TRTF5 will ever be finished, which he simply replied that it will never be,[1] meaning that any chances on getting TRTF5 officially revived again are very much unlikely now.

Due to how many times the game was altered and changed hands, a lot of assets went missing during and after development (Builds, Models, Maps, Audio, Characters, and more), basically becoming lost media. A fair bit of these assets, builds, and more have resurfaced, but a huge amount of files are still currently lost or unavailable. Currently, its unknown what contents so far have been permanently destroyed, and its unknown how many people have access to missing assets relating to The Return To Freddy's 5.

If you happen to have anything in relation to The Return to Freddy's 5, or any other The Return To Freddy's games and you believe it is not publicly available, then it is suggested that you look on The Internet Archive, and see if the file(s) you have are on said website. If the files you have are not available on the site, then it is asked that you upload them onto the site and/or contact an archivist within the The Return To Freddy's Community as soon as possible for archival.

Plot Summary

You're an investigator, it is the year 2036. Everyone, but you stepped down on a cold case of the mysteries and murders of Fazbear Inc. You... are alive... You... are the child from the past....

Known Gameplay

The game was supposed to have 12 floors to explore, where the player assumes the role of Carson, an investigator who roams around in Fazbear INC., and needs to survive from the Torture Suits by hiding in certain spots, escaping from them, or pointing the flashlight at them, depending on which floor you are on. The player can also find items such as keys or batteries that could been found all around the Fazbear INC. factory.

Development History

The Return To Freddy's 5 had a long development history, having been developed from 2015 until 2017, and even having life afterwards with a potential official remake of the project, however ultimately, the game has never officially been released. Unfortunately, a lot of the details when it comes to the development history on The Return To Freddy's 5 are murky, mostly having been lost to time, however a lot of remnants, both from the official team and other sources have been discovered and archived over the years. Note that more discoveries may cause changes to this page, and this page is not to be treated as a complete description of events, just a description of what is currently known.

Below is a simple two paragraph synopsis of the development history behind the project, providing a very simple version of events. If you wish to see a full description of events which attempts to provide as much as possible, scroll down further.

The following is a rough draft, and will be altered by the members and writers of The Return To Freddy's Wiki. Please proceed with caution.

Synopsis

The Return To Freddy's 5 began around the time The Return To Freddy's 4 released, at the time being called "The Return To Freddy's: REMASTERED", taking form as a reboot of the series with a new story, characters, and animatronics. The game was teased to feature "Hybrid" Animatronics (Later changed into the Torture/Tortured Animatronics) and was shown to be free roam, as well as containing to side modes called "Co-Op Mode/TRTF:Online" and "Sabani Mode". Eventually, the game would be renamed to "The Return To Freddy's: Rebooted", and was changed to feature Torture Animatronics, as well as scrapping Sabani Mode and replacing it with GPD Mode. Eventually, the game's name would change once more to "The Return To Freddy's 5" and would become another entry in the saga, but a little after this change the game would have it's development restart within Unreal Engine 4, before shortly after being reverted back to Clickteam, and an abandoned demo being released shortly after of the clickteam iteration of the game, as well as a build of the Unreal iteration at an unknown time. The game would continue to receive teasers and updates and despite being announced to have been cancelled on November 22nd and BFP faking to have been another person named "Yin Kouiu", a trailer was released on December 20th, a demo shortly following up on either the 25h or 26th, being dubbed the "Unfinished Demo".

After a long period of development, with a possible development restart at one point, in around October of 2016, Tyler would hand development over to two other developers, TannerFeline and Toonster, as his Counselor advised him to stop working on the project. Ultimately though, Toonster and Feline would split apart with their own versions after disagreements on the lore. Eventually, Toonster would cancel his version on the game, and TannerFeline would do the same as well on January 6th, 2017. During this time, in around December 2016, Tyler would hand the entire series to a person named Bioninjagames, who wished to change the lore, remove some of the characters, and give the animatronics new models. While the game was set to release on April 15th, 2017, on February 6th, 2017, Bioninjagames would ultimately cancel his version of The Return To Freddy's 5 due to the backlash he received from changing the lore, at which point, Tyler officially ended The Return To Freddy's Series.

Initial Development

The Return To Freddy's 5 originally began development sometime in Mid-2015, at the time being known as The Return To Freddy's: REMASTERED. The game was originally meant to take form as a semi reboot of the series, featuring new gameplay, story, and characters. While later the name was adapted to this, the game kept the name of "Remastered" for quite some time. When development specifically started is unknown, however, it is speculated to have been a little before The Return To Freddy's 4 released, with heavy inspiration from games such as Monstrum, Soma, Alien Isolation, Outlast, and especially the Amnesia series, specifically Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs, even using sounds from Amnesia:TTD and Amnesia:AMFP. Early work would begin on the game, with likely the two primary pieces of content to begin creation being the game's character models, and the first Teaser Game.

Remastered Era

While exact dates are unknown for when all of these events occurred, Tyler would release a teaser of a very early iteration of Torture Lockjaw. During this phase of development, the characters, instead of being Torture Suits, were instead Hybrid Animatronics, having been created by the machine years after Gron and Vincent would end up vandalizing the machine, now broken, merged together, and hostile. The player would take place as BFP, exploring the Fazbear INC. Factory as an investigator, after waking up from a long nightmare, said to be the events of the Volume 1 games. There were also plans to feature an online mode called Co-Op Mode/TRTF:Online, as well as another mode called Sabani Mode. While a lot is known about Co-Op Mode, as a build was leaked of the mode, Sabani Mode has zero information on it online, besides that it was named after an old development group Tyler was in around the same time, though it could have been a precursor to GPD Mode. This mode seemingly was scrapped fairly quickly, as in one of the builds, which featured a full title screen, it was noticeably missing.

After the initial teaser showing off Hybrid Lockjaw, more teasers would be revealed, with more shots of Hybrid Lockjaw and new images of Hybrid Kitty, Hybrid Freddy, Hybrid Bonnie, Hybrid Chica, Hybrid Foxy, Hybrid Golden Lockjaw, Hybrid Golden Kitty, and Hybrid Vigo. (There were more known animatronics known to have been planned at this point, such as several unnamed animatronics from the Everything_Animations leak, Hybrid Golden Freddy and Hybrid Springtrap, Hybrid Dug, and Hybrid Toy Animatronics, but they were either never modeled or never revealed, except Slaughter, who later became Torture Buster) However, not only were there teaser images, but also teaser games, two of which releasing during the Remastered Era. The first teaser game would release very early on, and explained what was happening with development around said time, showed off the title screen, and explained the initial story synopsis of the game. The second one would also release at another point, nicknamed "Protect Your Son", which would involve Gron protecting BFP, who originally in the lore was Gron's Son. As well as this, there were two known test builds shown off and released during development both of which being currently lost media. The first one being similar to the initial teaser game, however with the title screen fully unlocked, showing off Sabani Mode and a star next to Story Mode. The second one would be very different, with a new title screen (noticeably missing Sabani Mode, seemingly implying that this was when the mode was scrapped) and an intro cutscene. These are currently the only known Remastered Era Builds.

As development would progress, the character models would be altered a few times. Originally, the models, similar to the TRTF3 models, were edits of a prior game's models, in this case, edits of the TRTF4 models. However, this would not end up being permanent, as while some of the models would be edited, the models would start to be completely redone. However, later on, Tyler would make the decision to commissions Everything_Animations, a very popular 3D Animatronic Modeler, to do the hybrid models for the game. After being sent the references for the models already made and the descriptions for the other characters Tyler wanted modeled, Everything_Animations would create two models, one of which would be Slaughter, an early form of Torture Buster, and the other would end up being Hybrid Lockjaw. Eventually, Everything_Animations would no longer work on the project, as Tyler would be happy with the Torture Lockjaw model, and would remodel all of the other characters, not even taking the Slaughter character model. Why exactly Tyler did this was unknown, but Tyler would later on end up taking the task of being the character model. However, what is important, is that later on, the Hybrid Lockjaw model shown would be changed into Torture Lockjaw, and from this point on, the Hybrids were changed to the Tortures, and the game would be renamed to The Return To Freddy's: Rebooted, starting the Rebooted Era.

Rebooted Era

The Rebooted Era would begin around the time Torture Lockjaw's Model was created, with a new name and less of a yellow color scheme for the game, and more of a blue one, though the blue color scheme would only really begin to dawn towards the end of the rebooted Era. Only one teaser game released during this era, featuring a thief going through a factory stealing sugar heads, though this teaser game does not seem to contain any lore relevance. During this time, two "pre-release" builds were created (more are known to exist, but these are currently the only two known pre-release builds from the Rebooted Era), both of which featuring basic free roam. During this time, GPD Mode would end up coming to existence, being a mode that would act as a Sit'N'Survive Gameplay mode in Frankburt's Pizza and featuring 6 nights, as well as a "Gold Hunt Mode", where you would hunt the nightguard as Torture Fredbear. Besides that, nothing much is known about this gamemode. The game would proceed with development well, however, eventually, a change was made to the game, and it was decided that it would no longer be a reboot, and instead would be a new installment of the series. Thus bringing upon the infamous name of "The Return To Freddy's 5", and starting a new era for the series.

Abandoned/Unreal Era

The Abandoned/Unreal Era of the game's development would begin upon the game's renaming. The game's story would also be changed, featuring Carson as an investigator instead of BFP, as well as several other lore changes. However, another even more massive change would come, as Tyler had decided, due to Clickteam's limitations, that he would change the game's engine from Clickteam Fusion to Unreal Engine 4. This would involve changing the game from a Point and Click game to a fully 3D Free roaming game similar to Amnesia or The Joy of Creation: Reborn (though Reborn had yet to exist at this time), and completely restarting development. This version of the game had by far the most people working on it out of all the eras, with over a dozen different people working on the game at this time. The leaked project file for this version of the game seems to have been created October 5th, 2015 using the Third Person Starting Kit, the animations in which match the ones the in-game character model uses (implying that this is when this version of the game started development roughly). Despite that the project file seemingly wasn't touched after October, the compiled build which we currently have (and is the only known available build from the Unreal phase currently) is dated to have been built on November 20th, 2015, and only features one level, likely meaning Tyler commented out the other levels from the building process. Not much was done, the only things being found in the files being an early Lockjaw prototype, an early door prototype, a basic menu, and very simple controls.

A few more teaser games would actually release during this time, one of them being Teaser Game 6, the name of which being odd as it was the 4th teaser game to release, possibly meaning more teaser games were planned, those being Teaser Games 4 and 5, though whether they truly exist is unknown. This one showed off a Halloween minigame which would be played randomly when the player died, as well as some minigames and screenshots of the Unreal Engine version of the game. Although this version of the game was supposed to have basic 2D 8-bit minigames originally, it was later planned to have 3D low-poly minigames with a similar artstyle to Super Mario 64 later in it's development (according to a Reddit post by Grammar Wizard). These 3D low-poly minigames had very little work done on them however.

Sometime around early November of 2015, the TRTF 5 Dev Team's Game Jolt account was hacked.[2]. Three members of the dev team left because of this and a new TRTF 5 Dev Team and TRTF 5 Game Jolt page had to be created because of this. On November 22nd, 2015, Tyler would announce that the game was cancelled due to him being tired with the FNaF fan base.[3]. Notably, the compiled build available online was compiled two days before this announcement, which while not saying a whole lot, might say as to a few possibilities on why the cancellation happened, though ultimately, it remains a mystery. Things ultimately would be heavily confusing, and nobody knows when/if the game was publicly stated to be cancelled around this time. Around December 15th, Tyler's website would link a teaser which redirected to his Twitch account. During this time, two livestreams entitled "Please Stand By" would go on for about a day. While it was intended to be shown on the 19th, it ultimately was delayed an extra day due to Tyler staying up for nearly 3 days working on the trailer. However, a rough cut of the audio was shown in it's place alongside a 20 second snippet of the intro. On December 20th, 2015[4], the official trailer would be premiered live on Twitch and then later be uploaded to YouTube, showing the game was still alive. Whether the game was truly cancelled during this time frame is unknown, but this would begin a small era, that being the Unfinished Era.

Unfinished/Runtime Era

The Unfinished Era would begin upon the release of the trailer, showing an entirely revamped version of the game (which was now back to being in Clickteam Fusion), and showing off two of the game's floors, as well as major updates planned for the original Volume 1 games. Only 5-6 days later, on either December 25th, 2015 or December 26th, 2015, the Unfinished Demo would be released, containing a small section of Floor 1, as well as Torture Lockjaw and Torture Foxy. How much of the game was done during this era is unknown, as 5 floors were shown off during development, and rumors spoken by some individuals state that the game was basically finished, however, whether this was true is unknown. What is known though, is that a few floors and animatronics at the minimum were implemented, and a fair amount of progress was done on the game. For a brief period during February 2016, Tyler would announce that he was leaving the project and handing it over to a trusted friend of his named Yin Kouiu.[5] Ultimately though, this ended up being a lie as people found out in April that Yin Kouiu ended up just being a fake alter ego of Tyler's. The motive behind this decision still remains unclear, as he still was announcing new additions to the game while Yin was around, despite his initial statement saying that he gave the project to him along with the rights to the series. Ultimately though around May, alongside the announcement for Trailer #2, he announced that he would end up remodeling all the floors and development would seemingly pretty much restart once again.

At this point, the gameplay was heavily altered, though how much alteration was done is currently unknown, but the gameplay was changed, and both Floor 1 and Floor 2 were completely changed from their prior counterparts. Eventually, later on, a trailer would be released, showing the game in its current state, showing Lockjaw in the level, even attacking the player. This is odd, as the "final" MFA file features no Torture Lockjaw Animations, Frames, or AI. This was due to the case being that AI was indeed being worked on around the time of Trailer #2 but shortly before the Runtime Demo was sent out to testers, he decided to do new renders for the walking animations and effectively scrapped the AI for Lockjaw. Whatever the case, around this time, a new mode, Adventure Mode, was introduced. This mode was intended to feature a version of FNAF World but with TRTF Characters, more adult humor, and supposedly an online mode. The project would continue on, mostly staying in mystery with teasers appearing every once and a while, until eventually, tragedy would strike once more, as soon it would be revealed in October of 2016 that Tyler has decided to hand TRTF over to two developers, TannerFeline and Toonster, as his counselor had advised him to stop working on the project. From here, while the project was not cancelled, this would be where the project would finally begin to enter its downward spiral towards its fate of cancellation.

Post Tyler Era

From here, as of October 2016, begins the "Post Tyler Era", where other developers would attempt to try and finish this series with it's fifth installment. However, very shortly after this, in December of the same year, Toonster and TannerFeline split apart, both deciding to make their own versions of the game due to a disagreement, that being in regards to the lore, as while Feline wished to keep it the same, Toonster wanted to change it. While at some unknown point Toonster would cancel his version, Tanner's version would only last another month, as it was cancelled on January 6th, 2017. However, things would get more complicated as at some point, Tyler, in the same month as the split between Toonster and Feline, would hand the entire series over to a person named Bioninjagames, who also planned to change the lore, remove some of the characters, and give the torture animatronics new models. Ultimately however, this project would also end up being cancelled around a month after Feline's, on February 6th, 2017 due to the backlash it got from the changing of the lore. At this point, Tyler had officially decided to end The Return To Freddy's Series, marking the final end of The Return To Freddy's 5's development, and while this project has not officially been in development since, there were some considerations on an official remake by Tyler later on.

Potential Remake

Upon the reveal of The Return To Freddy's: Chapter One, Tyler did a Q&A video on the game, where he answered many fan questions, several of which regarding The Return To Freddy's 5. Tyler would end up actually confirming that he wished to revive The Return To Freddy's 5, though with some changes, including the scrapping of unnecessary characters (Kitty, Femjaw, BFPuppet, Fang, etc), bringing back the hybrids (though still being called the Tortures), and completely remaking the models and starting from scratch. However, these plans were never clearly stated whether they were going to 100% happen. Ultimately, things would go dark, especially upon the appearance of The Road That Falls, an original reboot of The Return To Freddy's with original characters. The only appearance that would be made of The Return To Freddy's between this mentioning of plans and the now would be The Return To Freddy's: Desolation and a remake of said game Desolation: A TRTF Story. Ultimately, however, Breim, the developer behind Desolation, and an employee of Kriya Studios, Tyler's Company and Studio, responded to a comment asking if The Return To Freddy's 5 will ever be finished, however, he responded saying that it simply never will. As a result, it seems like these plans will never come to fruition.

Current Status

As of October 2023, the game has not been released and is still cancelled. The game very unlikely will ever be released, as unfortunately, the game itself, due to both complexity, scale, over ambition, and developer failure, all prevent such a game from existing. While many fan recreations exist, an official fifth entry in the series does not exist, and unfortunately, will likely not exist, with the closest projects that exist being Desolation: A TRTF Story, and The Road That Falls.

Trivia

  • This was going to be the only game in the series to have free roam.
  • At one point in the game's development, in a scene, the player is asked about everything being a nightmare.
    • This theory was believed even before this was shown, due to text when the game starting.
    • The text was later changed to "Life is like a butterfly's dream".
    • The game still mentions nightmares during the beginning cutscene that plays when the game was launched for the first time.
  • There were going to be 9 endings. It was originally going to be 15, but Tyler didn't have enough ideas.
  • This was going to take place during both day and night.
  • Tyler confirmed that most of the animatronics from the series would have returned in the game.
    • A character contest was also held to see who were the most requested animatronics to return (this contest is not to be confused with the one where Tortured Nightbrid and Tortured Butcher Boy won).
  • This game contains the most cut characters from any TRTF game, having Torture Ice Cream Man, Popper Ping, Tortured Tealer, Tortured Ripdoll, and the cut design for Tortured Sugar, albeit only in Kennytheestallion and TannerFeline's version.
  • During its lifespan and development of the game, Tyler planned to make one of the first and ever merchandise items around the series, such as iPhone cases, coffee mugs, t-shirts, posters and etc.
  • From hints of the remastered version of the TRTFSR, it is likely that the remaster of The Return to Freddy's Remastered (2020) game was to possibly be a remake of not only the first, but the fifth game as well.
  • DLC was being considered for TRTF 5 in October of 2015. [6]
